Gas Fireplace Maintenance Tips
Let’s face it, gas fireplace maintenance in Westminster is a big deal. Lehrer Fireplace offers a quality selection of gas fireplaces for your home. Here we provide several tips to keep them running perfectly throughout the year:
What to do if you have issues with your pilot light:
Not all gas fireplaces have pilot lights, as some have electronic ignition systems. If your fireplace uses a pilot light, you may be experiencing problems such as the pilot light not lighting or not staying lit. Usually you can do some tests yourself to discover if you have a good pilot flame or not. A blue flame is what’s preferable and a yellow flame is not right, as it shows there’s not enough oxygen. There are fireplaces that give off a yellow flame to look more realistic, but we recommend you get this looked at as you may be risking carbon monoxide being given off when a yellow flame is present.
Fixing ignition problems:
Sometimes your fireplace will light perfectly via its thermostat, if it’s set up to do that. Then all of a sudden it will go off and reignite. This can be disconcerting and may require a service call. Often an overheated or dirty sensor can cause this problem. You may set up a service call with us to help you troubleshoot this issue. Sometimes you can help pinpoint the problem beforehand so the service technician’s call will be as short as possible. Listen for the igniter trying to light the pilot. Also it could be, too, that your fireplace needs to have power going to it at all times. Some people use a wall switch and flip it on and off. Describe your setup to the service tech and he or she will help determine your problem. The fix could be as easy as leaving the wall switch in the ‘on’ position all the time and using a remote to start the fireplace.
Odd sounds and smells:
Of course if you smell gas, you should leave your home and call your gas company to come and address the situation. Other than that, there can be some strange smells and sounds that come from your fireplace. There will be some dirt and dust buildup over time and your user manual can instruct you how to keep your fireplace clean. If you have misplaced your manual you can find the model or serial number of your fireplace and search for the manual online. Cleaning is fairly easy and will help extend the life of your fireplace.
